Sixty Interpretations of Sixty Seconds by Sixty Solo Improvisers
from SC#4 (Oct. 2010)
by Matt Fong

Compiled by guzheng player David Sait, this is exactly what the title says - there are sixty musicians from all over the world each of whom recorded a solo improvisation that is one minute long. David then took the pieces and stitched them back to back into ten tracks. The instrumentation varies widely, as does the way each musician interpreted their sixty seconds. You’ll find everything from field recording soundscapes to a bluegrass banjo shred-fest.

There are two ways to listen to this record. You can listen to each track as it’s own entity, which poses an interesting challenge. I found myself listening much more intently to try and make associations between the pieces chosen for each track. In some cases, I could detect some sort of continuity, in others it was more difficult. You can also listen to it as a collection of sixty individual tracks. In this case, I found myself listening to each musician in a more personal way, since their performance was no longer in thecontext of what five other musicians were doing.

All in all this is a very interesting and unique record. While I didn’t love every minute of it, the concept was well executed and there are some really beautiful moments. I’ll be back.
